MESH UP - how to wear the new mesh for day or night

November 28, 2013

Most famously hung across the shoulders of such 80s icons as Madonna and Sid Vicious , mesh fabrics used to be synonymous with punk gods, metal heads and OTT styling replete with studs, nose rings and creepers. If there were a song that described mesh it would be David Bowie's anarchist  anthem "Rebel,Rebel". However, this netted fabric has gone a long way in it's evolution through the decades and here it is before us in an utterly more grown up version that is , dare I say it - precise and refined.

Elusively hinting at nudity yet demurely chaste, the new mesh fabrics are as innovative as they are ultra cool. Close to home Dion Lee has utilised the trend in a number of looks ranging from tops to dresses , and the results are nothing short of extraordinary. Still keeping it's subversive core, while appearing completely wearable, these pieces are a practical summer godsend - airy and light, they keep the wearer comfortable in the summer heat. Nose ring optional.

For day , look no further than a quilted metallic skirt, worn with a comfortable loose top and wedge booties - snarl wearer's own. (Kenzo skirt from stylebop.com, Dion Lee bralette and top, Isabel Marant booties, Amber Sceats jewellery )

Pulling up on it's disobeying credentials while being impeccably tailored has produced a sexy elegance in this mesh Dion Lee dress. Cutouts and clever twists serve to add to the perfectly hourglass way it moulds to the body. This is one night time look that won't go by unnoticed.  ( dress by Dion Lee, shoes by Vionett, jewellery by Amber Sceats)

Summer in Australia is so magical to me, because it summons pictures of sandy bums, al fresco lunches, beach parties, barbecues with friends, New Year fireworks, pool slides and a sweltering Santa. Sartorially, it is always a time for me to do a major closet shuffle and realise that I have nothing to wear for all […]

5:45pm:  After navigating my appointments, it is time to coordinate the final rsvps for the dinner I am holding tonight at the beautiful Icebergs restaurant. After hitting  30 and most of my friends having children,  it is hard enough making dinner plans with one person, let alone 11! I sent everyone calendar reminders and now […]
Sustainability gets Sexy

Sustainability is a new buzz word in fashion and for good reason – turns out the clothes business is the second biggest polluter in the world, just behind oil. Yep, I winced too but the facts remain- fast fashion is costing the planet. It turns out a humble t-shirt requires 3 years worth of drinking […]
