THEMIS

Price range: $300 through $920

A figure stands at the edge of the sea with her back to the world, arms raised wide, a veil of gold mesh stretched between them like wings. Her eyes are bound. The horizon she cannot see is the soft pink-and-teal horizon of an early Adriatic morning. This is Themis — the Greek goddess of divine order, traditionally depicted blindfolded so as to weigh judgement without seeing the parties before her. Here she has been given two things she does not own: the wings of Nike, victory, and the choice of Icarus — to step into the air without sight.

The photograph was made during the pandemic, in a year when the whole world was being asked to stand on a horizon it could not see and trust that there was still ground.
